The Arkham Sessions, Ep. 49: “What is Reality?”

The Riddler is back, and this time he’s equipped with a virtual reality game so dangerous that it could actually kill Commissioner Gordon, Robin, and the Caped Crusader himself!

As part of his devious, narcissistic scheme, Riddler sends the Gotham City Police Department a massive interactive computer, and ultimately traps our heroes in a virtual reality world only he can manipulate. But the brilliant Batman quickly solves Riddler’s logic puzzles and brain teasers, eventually discovering ways that he can control the simulated environment just as well as the Riddler himself!

As we discuss this all-too-familiar sci-fi story, we explore the many benefits and drawbacks of virtual reality.  In addition to the psychological perspective, we resource work by a medical examiner. How is VR technology used in psychotherapy? Can people really be affected psychologically or physiologically from participating in an “unreal” environmental experience? Is Batman really in his element when he gets to “control” the world around him?  Listen to the episode below for another analysis of Batman: The Animated Series.
